Hardboard

Type of Lumber: Hardboard

Hardboard Texture BackgroundHardboard, also known as high-density fiberboard or HDF, is an EWP that can be used for a number of purposes and projects. It is made from small wood fibers and wood pulp that is pressed until it is densely impacted and then baked for added stability. It is stronger and harder than most EWPs. Unlike particleboard, hardboard does not crack or split. During construction, hardboard is often used to protect other less durable wood before it is finished.

The uses of hardboard are endless. It is most commonly used for:

  • construction
  • flooring
  • furniture construction
  • home appliances
  • cabinetry

Homeowners and contractors can cover hardboard with other products such as Formica, laminated paper, and vinyl. Because it is so versatile, many homeowners and crafters want to use it for DIY projects. It can be easily used as a canvas for oil and acrylic paintings. Perforated hardboard is often used for organizational and crafting purposes. You can install hooks on it and make it easy to organize tools, awards, or just about anything.
