About Prior Lake

Located 20 miles southwest of downtown Minneapolis is Prior Lake. The city is one of the oldest cities in the area with its incorporation in 1891. The city is home to over 22,796 residents who often travel into the Twin City Metropolitan area. We are proud to serve residents and contractors of Prior Lake every day.

The former farming community saw little growth in its early years. The town was in close proximity of Spring Lake Village. The neighboring villages were separated by a railroad in 1871. The separations of the two towns lead to Spring Village’s demise. The land was adopted by Prior Lake just five years later.

Prior Lake is made of a two section of lake. The Upper Prior Lake and Lower Prior Lake each span over 810 acres. The upper lake flows north and drains into the lower portion of the lake. Both sections of the lake are used year round for fishing and other activities.

The city is home to its own newspaper, the Prior Lake American. The newspaper is mailed to over 7,500 homes in the city at no costs to the residents. The newspaper also serves other surrounding cities. Both Credit River and Spring Lake look to the Prior Lake American for their weekly report.

The city is home to a shared school district. The Prior Lake-Savage School District serves five surrounding towns in the area. The district is home to two middle schools, six elementary schools and two high schools.
