The City of Minneapolis is the largest city in the state of Minnesota. The city is situated on both sides of the Mississippi River. It also is known for its many lakes throughout the city. The name Minneapolis was coined by the city’s first city. It was a contraction of the Dakota Sioux word for water ”mni” and the Greek word for city “polis”, thus creating the word Minneapolis.
The original industry of the city was milling. In the late 1800’s the wheat grown in Minnesota became highly desirable. General Mills and Pillsbury were both founded in Minneapolis. The two mills conflicted for years until recently Pillsbury was bought by General Mills. The growth of these mills greatly contributed to the growth of the city.
Minneapolis is well known for its many sports teams including: Minnesota Twins (Baseball), Vikings (Football), Timberwolves (Men’s Basketball), Linx (Women’s Basketball), Wild (Hockey), Minnesota United FC (Soccer) and Swarm (Lacrosse). Many of their teams have been highly successful throughout their histories.
Minneapolis has a thriving downtown that is dedicated to promoting culture and education. It has a very large theatre district, second only to New York City. The Minneapolis Orchestra plays classical and popular music at Orchestra Hall. However, there is also a growing rap and spoken word community.
