Composition

Gypsum board has a noncombustible core and it is tested for safety. It’s composed of gypsum, a mineral found in sedimentary rock formations, and roughly 21 percent chemically combined water. In addition to its many other benefits, gypsum board serves as a fire resistive barrier. Fire rated gypsum is more fire resistant than other types of gypsum because it contains glass reinforcements that enable it to hold up for longer periods of time when exposed to fire.

Applications

Fire rated gypsum is required by state and local building codes on exterior and interior walls and ceilings near furnaces and service rooms. Fire rated gypsum is also a good drywall material for walls and ceilings near fireplaces, wood stoves, kitchens and other areas of the house that may be subject to a potential fire.
