Des Moines is the capital of Iowa. It is the most populous city in the state of Iowa with a population of 203,433, according to the 2010 census. It was named after the Des Moines River, which likely comes from the French, Rivière des Moines, or River of the Monks.
In 2014, NBC labeled Des Moines as the “Wealthiest City in America”, and in 2010 and 2013, Forbes ranked Des Moines as the “Best Place for Business.” Many insurance companies have based their headquarters in Des Moines.
Des Moines became an incorporated city in 1851. Then in 1857, the name changed from Fort Des Moines to Des Moines. It also became the capital of Iowa at that time. The city remained small in population until after the American Civil War. After the war, the railroad built a station in Des Moines and the population exploded. Many families moved to Des Moines during this time.
At the turn of the 20th century, the population continued to grow and many buildings and fountains were constructed during this time. Many of these buildings have been preserved and have lasted until today. By the mid century, Des Moines suburbs began to grow greatly, and the metropolitan area has become the 88th most populous area in the country.
Des Moines is also a very political city. During the presidential primaries, the Iowa caucuses are extremely important. Many presidential candidates base their headquarters in Des Moines.
