Fargo is the largest city in North Dakota. It makes up almost 15 percent of the population of North Dakota. In 2014, Forbes ranked Fargo as #4 on its list of “America’s Fastest-Growing Small Cities”. It is a center of health, retail, education, industry and culture in the Midwest.

Founded in 1871, the city was originally called “Centralia”. It was a stopping point for steamboats that floated down the Red River. Then, when the Northern Pacific Railway came through town, the city began to flourish. The city was renamed “Fargo” after the director of the railway and the founder of Wells Fargo Express Company, William Fargo.

Fargo places a large emphasis on education. It is the home to many colleges and universities including: North Dakota State University, North Dakota State College of Science, University of Mary, and Masters Baptist College.

There are many entertainment centers and museums in town to promote culture:

  • Fargo Theatre – A recently restored 1926 art deco movie theatre where they show first-run films and host film festivals.
  • Plains Art Museum – Largest art museum in the state. Features national and regional exhibits as well as its permanent collection.
  • Fargo Air Museum – A collection of historic aircrafts, where a majority of them are in still in flying condition.
