Webster City is the county seat of Hamilton County, Iowa. The land of Webster City, was first seen by non-natives in 1835. Three companies of Dragoon soldiers in the United States Army viewed the land. The commanding officer, Col. Stephen W. Kearney, named the local river, Boone River, after another officer, Capt. Nathan Boone. Capt. Nathan Boone was the son of the American hero, Daniel Boone. The city’s first official settler was Wilson Brewer. In 1855, the land was platted, and a post office was built.

A majority of Webster City’s industry is based in advanced manufacturing, plastics manufacturing, food processing, agricultural related products, and warehousing and distribution. Many companies’ headquarters are located in Webster City, including: Van Diest Supply Company ,Webster City Custom Meats, Mary Ann’s Specialty Foods, and Tasler.

Webster City places a high priority on recreation. Its proximity to the Boone River allows residents to enjoy sports such as canoeing or kayaking. Every year, residents participate in a cardboard boat race, the Boone Bash River Dash.

Webster City was the home of 2 Pulitzer Prize winning authors: MacKinlay Kantor and Clark R. Mollenhoff. Kantor won the Fiction Pulitzer in 1956 because of his book, Andersonville. Mollenhoff won the National Reporting Pulitzer in 1958 for his work in the Des Moines Register and Tribune.
